The Jacksonville Jaguars promoted Gene Smith to general manager and senior vice president of player personnel on Monday.
Smith, 45, replaces James Harris, who resigned as the team's vice president of player personnel on December 23.
"The changes we are making will bring greater clarity in responsibilities, with Gene Smith having final say in personnel decisions and (coach) Jack Del Rio having final say in all coaching decisions,"
said team owner Wayne Weaver. "Gene has been given greater and greater responsibility with this organization, and I am confident that in this new role he will be successful in directing our football operation."
Smith has held several positions within the Jaguars' personnel department since 1994 and is one of 15 current staff members who joined the organization in its first year.
"I appreciate and am grateful for Wayne's leadership and his confidence in me,"
said Smith. "Our challenge is to build a playoff-caliber team that can compete to win a world championship. I'm looking forward to developing a roster with Jack that will give our coaching staff a competitive advantage."
Jacksonville also named Terry McDonough the director of player personnel, Tim Mingey assistant director of college personnel and Andy Dengler national scout.
The Jaguars finished the 2008 season with a record of 5-11 on the heels of an 11-5 record in the 2007 season.
