Mustain Throws 3 TDs, Bradford Runs For 2 In USC Scrimmage

Sophomore quarterback Mitch Mustain threw 3 touchdown passes, including a pair to sophomore wide receiver Ronald Johnson, and junior tailback Allen Bradford ran for 2 more scores to highlight the USC football team's first intrasquad scrimmage of 2008 spring practice on Sunday (April 6) at USC.

Mustain, who started 8 games as a true freshman at Arkansas in 2006 before transferring to USC last season, hit Johnson for a 70-yard TD on his first throw of the scrimmage, then connected with junior fullback Adam Goodman on a 10-yard scoring toss and with Johnson again on a 31-yard TD. Mustain completed 7 of his 9 pass attempts for 137 yards, while Johnson caught 3 passes for 113 yards.

Junior quarterback Mark Sanchez, who started 3 games for the Trojans last year, was 9-of-15 passing for 106 yards, while redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Corp was 4-of-8 for 51 yards with an interception.

Bradford ran for 84 yards on 4 carries, including TDs of 2 yards and then 73 yards. Sophomore tailback C.J. Gable gained 52 yards on 3 carries. Fellow soph tailback Joe McKnight had 138 all-purpose yards, including a 94-yard scoring kickoff return. Redshirt freshmen tailbacks Marc Tyler and Broderick Green added 36 and 35 rushing yards, respectively, on 7 carries each.

Sophomore fullback Stanley Havili had a 3-yard touchdown run on the scrimmage's opening drive.

USC also scored a touchdown on sophomore safety Robert Erickson's 12-yard return of a punt blocked by sophomore cornerback Omari Crittenden. Senior placekicker David Buehler nailed a 32-yard field goal.

The Trojan defense posted 8 sacks and got 3 turnovers in the 78-play scrimmage. Senior linebacker Clay Matthews had 3 sacks, sophomore defensive tackle Christian Tupou made 4 tackles, redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Campbell had 4 tackles and caused a fumble that Crittenden recovered, junior cornerback Matthew Jordan recovered another fumble and junior safety Justin Hart had an interception.

Six-time defending Pac-10 champion USC, which is midway through its spring drills, opens its 2008 season on Aug. 30 at Virginia.
