Fla.----The Jacksonville Jaguars finalized a trade for fourth-year cornerback David Jones this weekend. A Wingate University All-American, Jones was acquired along with an undisclosed draft pick in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals for safety Reggie Nelson.
A 6-0, 197 pound cornerback, Jones played in 33 games with seven starts for the Bengals the past three seasons. He appeared in a career-high 14 games in 2008 and totaled 44 tackles and seven pass break-ups. Jones played in 12 games in 2009 on defense and special teams.
Jones faced fellow Wingate All-American Kenwin Cummings (N.Y. Jets) in the NFL play-offs Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010. Jones was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints (2007 fifth round, 145th pick), but was cut before the season began. The Bengals signed him a day later (Sept. 2, 2007).
A graduate of Greenville High School, Jones played in the 2007 Hula Bowl following his illustrious Wingate career. In 2006, Jones was named a first team AFCA All-American after recording 24 tackles, four interceptions and 12 pass deflections. Jones also caught two passes, both resulting in touchdowns. He blocked a punt on special teams.
