USC at a glance

USC at a glance

September 1, 2007

* Coach: Pete Carroll, seventh season, 65-12.

* Last season: 11-2 overall; 7-2 in Pacific 10 Conference, co-champion.

* Key losses: WR Dwayne Jarrett, FL Steve Smith, C Ryan Kalil, PK Mario Danelo, LBs Dallas Sartz and Oscar Lua, DT Chris Barrett, RB Emmanuel Moody.

* Returning starters: QB John David Booty, RBs Chauncey Washington and C.J. Gable, OT Sam Baker, OG Chilo Rachal, OG/OT Drew Radovich, TE Fred Davis, DE Lawrence Jackson, DTs Sedrick Ellis and Fili Moala, LBs Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing, CBs Terrell Thomas and Cary Harris, SS Kevin Ellison, FS Taylor Mays and CB/S Josh Pinkard.

* Top newcomers: RBs Joe McKnight and Broderick Green, DE Everson Griffen, WRs Ronald Johnson and Brandon Carswell, LBs Chris Galippo and Malcolm Smith, C Kristofer O'Dowd.

* Offense: The Trojans open the season ranked No. 1 but the only real certainty on offense is Booty. The receivers, other than Turner, are unproven and have huge shoes to fill. The running backs, for the most part, have struggled to remain healthy. And the offensive line is a question mark because of Kalil's departure and Baker's cracked rib. Then again, there's a reason the Trojans could be double-digit favorites in every game. Talent.

* Defense: With 10 of 11 starters returning and depth at virtually every spot, this could be the nation's best defense. Could be. However, the Trojans need their defense to create more turnovers than last season and become a scoring threat. Pinkard's return after a season-ending knee injury in the 2006 opener provides flexibility in the secondary. The front seven is capable of a monstrous pass rush.

* Intangibles: Many of USC's key players have been through a championship-game run before. Experience, especially on defense, should pay off. Booty showed in the Rose Bowl against Michigan that he can carry the burden. Now he welcomes it.

* Key to the season: Like Matt Leinart before him, Booty must remain healthy. Baker and Ellis also are invaluable for a team that could play in the Bowl Championship Series title game for the third time in four years if it can avoid looking ahead.

what. We couldn't stop him. He's the key to their team," Cofield said. "But I'm most proud of the fact that our team didn't quit. We'll be back next week. Just watch."

With Mays well in control at the start of the fourth quarter, Washington pulled to within 28-14 on the first play of the period, when junior wingback Brandon Smith returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs' defense stood tall against Mays' rushing attack, keyed by senior Remontae Scott and junior Desmond Walker, who had two touchdowns. But Washington's offense couldn't mount another serious scoring threat.
